The beginning of the Town of Troutman can be traced to a settler with the name of Anne Troutman, and her children. Anne moved to a location which is now within downtown Troutman with her two adult sons and three daughters in 1853. Her sons started a wagon and carriage business, and later, when the railroad went through from Salisbury to Statesville in 1858, the train would stop at “Troutman’s”. Settlers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland and been coming to the surrounding areas since the 1750’s. Like people everywhere, they were attracted by promises of their own land, and the chance to start new towns. Troutman was incorporated in 1905. It has had steady growth since then, and today is a friendly small town with good schools, thriving local businesses, and many amenities for local citizens and visitors. Troutman is at the center of a rapidly growing economic region. A recent study predicted that the population was likely to double in the next 20 years, moving rapidly up from the current 15,000 population in the immediate vicinity of Troutman. Proposed new and ongoing developments include: 1,100 acres of US Highway 21 at Barium Springs Home for Children being developed into a commercial and residential community. A new development off exit 45 off Interstate 77, referred to as “the next Birkdale”, a reference to the existing residential, office, and commercial development at exit 25 in Huntersville. A $7 million, 30,000 square foot addition to Engineered Sintered Components that will increase the existing plant to 170,000 square feet with more than 500 employees. A proposed $1.5 million medical complex on a 1 acre site near downtown Troutman that will have an estimated 75 employees. Several major, larger residential subdivisions including higher end housing A new Town Library that will be 6,000 square feet and will be stocked with 22,000 books and 20 computer stations. Points of interest in the Troutman area include: Lake Norman State Park. A beautiful 1,328 acre park including 13 miles of lake shoreline within the park itself. Amenities include family and group campsites, boat ramps and rentals, hiking and biking trails, swimming and fishing. Lake Norman itself, the largest manmade lake in the state, with over 35,000 acres of water area and 520 miles of shoreline. Many families live on the lake, and others access the lake through the many boat ramps and beaches provided for the public. Boating, jet skiing, water-skiing, tubing, wake boarding, fishing, exploring islands and beaches, and just plain swimming, are some of the popular activities on Lake Norman. County Fairgrounds with year round events including the annual National Hot Air Balloon rally New Barium Springs YMCA facility serving over 9,700 members, Includes two full sized gyms, weight lifting, soccer and football facilities, and a full sized outdoor swimming pool with certified lifeguards on duty. Troutman also benefits by being within an hour of Charlotte and Winston-Salem, both offering concerts, major sporting events, and all the benefits of big city living. To the west of Troutman are the North Carolina mountains, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as many fully developed ski resorts. These mountain destinations are within 3 to 4 hours drive from our area. To the east, North Carolina beaches are 5 hours away, offering spectacular beauty and a family friendly environment for vacations.
